New Combo Treatment for Fibromyalgia
The Oregon Health & Science University recently did research on yoga exercises. They discovered that these exercises could help those who suffer from fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia is a medical disorder that shows itself as chronic widespread pain. The research done suggested people who suffer from this condition could gain relief from a combination of coping skills, medications and physical exercise.
James Carson, Ph.D., a clinical health psychologist, reported this study was focused on yoga to discover whether it can be prescribed as treatment for fibromyalgia. Fifty-three females who were diagnosed with fibromyalgia were divided into two groups. One group underwent an eight week program that included gentle yoga poses, breathing exercises, mediation and group discussions.
The other group received standard medication treatments for their condition. The women were given questionnaires and physical tests. Comparing results of the two groups revealed that yoga assisted in various fibromyalgia symptoms such as, fatigue, stiffness, poor sleep, pain, poor memory, depression and poor balance. These changes were clinically significant, meaning they were large enough changes to have an impact on the daily life of those with this condition. Pain was reduced by 24 percent, depression by 42 percent and fatigue by 30 percent.
